Senator Daschle plans to Filibuster the appointment of Senator elect Thune

S.D. voters elect John Thune to Senate; Daschle pledges to keep fighting for state

Daschle, 56, became the first Senate leader to be unseated since 1952, when Barry Goldwater of Arizona turned Senate Majority Leader Ernest McFarland out of office.

"This will not stand" Said Daschle in a brief speech to several hundred supporters, many of whom sobbed as they cheered and waved campaign signs. " I will fill the month of Jaunuary with a continuous litany while reading the minutes of the Sturgis, SD Harley Hogg convention. It is just not proper that the people of South Dakota be repressed by a conservative, anti abortion Senator.

A filibuster is allowed because the Constitution gives each house of Congress the right to "determine the Rules of its Proceedings." That means the Senate can run itself however it sees fit. With one short-lived exception, the Senate had no rule until 1917 to halt discussion on anything?reflecting the body's long-standing commitment to unlimited debate. A single senator thus had the power to hold the entire body hostage on an issue, so long as he was prepared to keep talking about it. Hence the term "filibuster," derived from the Spanish filibustero, or freebooter, meaning "pirate." (That word ultimately goes back to a pair of Dutch words that mean "free" and "booty"?which may or may not be relevant to goings-on in the Senate.)

Daschle went on to state that "Just because fillibustering lost me my senate seat does not make it wrong. I will ask to be recognized at Thunes inauguration and then speak for the next two years. I realize that my Filibustering of Bushes appointees held up the business of the senate and caused this country to be weaker but, darn it this country does not deserve strength if it plans on protecting the life of unborn children when our women rely on Roe~v~Wade to provide birth control. I plan on being fitted with a colostamy bag and catheter and getting fortified milk/water while speaking during the 2004-2006 period."

Pundits are debating whether or not the fortified milk/water will be equal to sustaining the lame duck senator during his 21 month filibuster.
